Lately, I’ve been having troubles with some people in my life who likes talking behind others and spilling nasty secrets that should’ve burned a long time ago. Whether it may be true or not, it’s still not okay to gossip about it. I never liked the idea of meddling. Some articles say it boosts morale. Well, maybe it’s just not for everyone.
Especially with this pandemic, almost 99% of the people stay at home and spend long hours on social media. I’ve seen families wrecked by the filthiest gossip. Some of them are close to being true but, the majority are just made-up ideas to spice up the rumour.
People rely on fake news to survive, despite the authenticity, especially for those in the entertainment industry. Yet, some are deeply disturbed with the idea of gossip alone. It causes irreversible offences to the majority. I made a list of some of the disturbing effects on people based on my own experience.
1 – GOSSIP CONTROLS HOW PEOPLE LIVE.
Someone who spreads malicious gossip controls everyone around them by putting false ideas into someone’s head unconsciously. Victims of this kind of verbal abuse live miserably for a long time. Others can survive it, but some have lived forever with the anxiety of being restrained.
2 – START MISLEADING QUARRELS
Spreading lies will either bring an argument that’s been in the closet far too long or kindle a disagreement that’s not even true. It will subtly devour the truth and give birth to a new discussion that’s not even connected to the main issue thus, creating more hatred.
3. IT CONCOCTS IRREVERSIBLE LIFELONG DAMAGE
It’s like an unpleasant memory formed in lies. No matter what you do, you will never disremember the feeling of hate, hostility, distrust and anxiety. We can always forgive, but we never forget.
4 – DEMOLISHES TIGHT FAMILY TIES
Envious gossip from friends or even relatives breaks trust within a family. No matter how strong the foundation is, a rumour will always be a rumour it exists to provoke and offend.
5 – IT AFFECTS JUDGEMENT
No matter how boring or ordinary a gossip is, it will always pique someone’s interest 100% of the time. Anyone who hears “that random news” will ignite a different level of curiosity. People will start giving off that annoyingly judgemental vibe. They will begin giving terrible and offensive advice as if you’ve known them long enough more than you’ve known your family.
7 – GOSSIP CREATES AGONY and MAKES A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF FEAR
Gossip makes the unseen seen. Victims are scared of people who spread false news and the idea that they can leave in somebody’s head. It initiates dragging anxiety that causes suicidal ideations and killing intentions, no matter how shallow it may be for some. Nevertheless, it destroys people and gives them unrelenting pain.
They can’t even walk straight with their chin up because they’re afraid. They see the people who ruined their lives walking free as if nothing happened, smiling at them as if they haven’t done anything to set them apart from others.
8 – MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO GOSSIPS DON’T SHOW REMORSE
Not all, but some don’t show guilt and shame. Some people act as they have helped someone, even though it’s made-up stories, also known as “white lies.” Some showed deep regret, but it’s just too late to apologise.
For me, these are the reasons why words hurt more than any weapon – it lasts long. Moreover, regardless of who you are in this society, significant or not, immunity will never be an option. These are just my personal opinion, and I think it differs from person to person.
A gossip betrays confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret. – Proverbs 11:13
